Jamie West, Ph.D., Post-Doctoral Resident in Marriage & Family Therapy
Dr. Jamie West earned a Doctorate in Human Development with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from a COAMFTE accredited program at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. She earned a Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Colorado State University and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology & Family Studies from Central Michigan University.
Dr. West provides services to teens, families, adults, and couples. She has 7 years of clinical experience and has completed extensive training. She has provided services at private practices, university family therapy centers, and community mental health and forensic corrections facilities.
Dr. West has lived abroad in various countries and strongly values her client’s cultural differences. She utilizes a strengths-based, collaborative and systematic approach to therapy. In her work with individuals, she integrates techniques from Narrative, Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness therapy modalities. Dr. West teaches couples strategies from the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy to provide partners with the skills necessary to strengthen friendship, enhance trust, and deepen their connections. Dr. West has completed the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy Level 1 training as well as the Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy clinical externship training.
Treatment specialties include: trauma/post-traumatic stress, grief and loss, social anxiety, substance abuse, coming out as LGBTQ+, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), conflict resolution, relationship enhancement, premarital therapy, and challenges related to divorce and separation, including assistance with co-parenting.
Dr. West is a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and regularly attends conferences presented by the Virginia Marriage & Family Therapy Division. She values continuing education and regularly attends training to stay informed of the most effective and innovative therapeutic approaches.
