Life Transitions & Loss

“Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”
― Martin Luther King, Jr.

What is a life transition?

A life transition is any change that impacts your life in a significant way. We all experience transitions throughout our lives, some big and some small, some planned, and some unplanned. Transitions can include both exciting and difficult things.

Examples of life transitions include, but are not limited to: graduating from school, moving, a new relationship, changing careers, a new job, losing a job, a new relationship, a break up or marital separation, having a child, a new job, illness, death of a loved one, retirement, financial changes and empty-nesting.

Can life changes cause feelings of grief?

Yes, grief is a normal and natural response to change. Grief is defined as emotional pain or suffering, that can negatively impact your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the more intense your grief may be. Coping with the loss of someone or something you care for is challenging and difficult.

What’s involved in the grieving process?

Grieving consists of several stages including denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance (learn more). There is no right or wrong way to grieve and it is a deeply personal and individual experience. Grief is not linear, and you can experience each stage of grief at different times and in different ways. Healing from grief often happens gradually so it is important to be compassionate and patient with yourself after you have experienced a life change or loss.
